Re-negotiating Relationships

A new program dedicated to support families of loved ones who are involved in the Criminal Justice System as a result of their drug or alcohol misuse. The experience of separation through incarceration of a family member can be devastating on the rest of the family. Families often have to cope with anxiety, stress, anger, guilt, fear and worry for loved ones' welfare and safety, with unclear direction and lack of awareness of help.

Family Drug Help offers families emotional and practical support to help navigate the difficulties and emotional challenges associated with incarceration of a family member.

The Family Drug Help Prisons Helpline provides :

  • Helpline service from 9am-5pm Mon.-Fri. Please leave a message after 5 pm
  • After hours call back at the time that suits you
  • Opportunity to talk with other family members with experience of the Criminal Justice System
  • Referral to specialist service providers, e.g. VACRO, Legal Aid, financial advice, counselling services etc.
  • 24 support groups across the state
  • Action for Recovery (ARC) - a six week education program
  • Free Counselling service to families and substance users. Please contact Jacqui Sundbery on (03) 9573 1785 or jsundbery@sharc.org.au to make an appointment.

Testimonials :    ARC   June 2007

" The course has given me back my life as an individual, not just a mother, who has to try and solve all manner of problems " Faye

" My anxiety and feellings of panic are reduced. I am more able to stand back and not expect myself to fix the problem and am also now able to see a way of improving my life and the situation I'm in "  Ray

" I have changed over the past few weeks as a result of this course. The main inspiration  comes from hearing from other  people who've had  a similar experience. It's extremely helpful  to be given strategies and advice. I wish it went for a few more weeks!!! "  Christine

" Matt (a person in recovery) is a strong minded, determined, successful and yet was drawn into drug use. How could this happened? His story showed me how easy this could happen, listening to Matt made me realise that overcoming drug use is a journey that is sometimes despairing and at other times inspirational!" Geoff

"  I think this course has opened my eyes to a new way to deal with people and situations  "  Don
